How to plan a stargazing date (that actually works)

A stargazing date is cheap, romantic and easy to get wrong (clouds, cold, a full Moon washing out the stars). How to get it right:

  1. Pick a night near the new moon

A bright Moon hides faint stars. Check our moon calendar for the next new moon. See your sky free →

  2. Check the weather and the sky

Clear skies matter more than anything; our planets-tonight tool shows what’s up.

  3. Go somewhere dark

Even 20–30 minutes outside a city makes a big difference.

  4. Give your eyes 20 minutes

Red light only — no phone screens.

  5. Bring blankets, chairs and something warm to drink

Nights get cold, even in summer.

  6. Plan one thing to find

A planet, the Milky Way, or a meteor shower like the Perseids (August) or Geminids (December).

  7. Keep the night

A star map of that exact night and place with both names — the sky you looked at together. From $14.99 at myskykept.com.

Tip: The best stargazing dates have a backup plan — a cosy film night if clouds roll in.
